Boys' Week of 5/8 Recap

Boys’ Week of 5/1 Runner of the Week:

Your boys’ Week of 5/1 Runner of the Week is Gahanna Lincoln sophomore Gavin Swain! He earned your vote after an impressive week of racing, where he ran 4:22 across 1600 meters at the Gene Cole Invitational, followed by 1:57.75 across 800 meters at the Gary Smith Invitational only a few days later. We look forward to seeing what Swain can do in the future, with the sky seeming to be the limit as he continues to improve following his exceptional freshman season.

Delaware County Invitational:

While lacking the traditional star power of previous years, the Delaware County Invitational still yielded several notable results. Olentangy Berlin’s Vansh Sethi cruised to an easy victory across 1600 meters in 4:24, with Olentangy’s Will Simons finishing as runner-up in 4:29. In the 800, Big Walnut’s Austyn Fox captured the crown in 1:58.01, followed by Olentangy Orange’s Gavin Valentik in 1:59.22 and Big Walnut’s Jamison Brandt in 1:59.95. The 3200 saw a tighter contest, with Olentangy Berlin’s Christian Passerini winning in 9:45, followed by Olentangy Orange’s Cowen Allender in 9:51 for runner-up.

Bradley Invitational:

Returning after a short hiatus, the Bradley Invitational featured several strong performances. In a tactical affair, Thomas Worthington’s Calvin Watson finished just 0.03 seconds ahead of Hilliard Bradley’s Griffin Ley to win the 1600. In the 800, Lancaster stars Gabe McNeil and Brock Jarrett cruised to 1-2 finishes in 1:56 and 1:57. In the 3200, Pickerington North’s Dominic Mercurio secured a commanding victory in 9:53.

Ed Rarey Gahanna Invitational:

Although a smaller meet, several noteworthy performances deserve shoutouts. In the 1600, Gahanna Lincoln’s Gavin Swain took the title in 4:19, followed by Hartley’s Rowan Smith in 4:20, Westerville Central’s Corbin Morrisey in 4:22, and Gahanna Lincoln’s Ethan LaCross in 4:23. In the 800, New Albany’s Lavon Wilborn won in 1:57.54, with both Marysville’s Mack Weithman and Gahanna Lincoln’s Beckett Anderson also breaking the 2:00 barrier.

Larkin and Crosten Classic:

Another of many competitive invitationals this week, the Larkin and Crosten Classic did not disappoint. The 1600 saw an incredibly tight finish, with Granville’s Callum Sproul edging Dublin Scioto’s Michael Kinzer by one-hundredth of a second in 4:21, while Upper Arlington’s Matt Schmersal finished in 4:23. In the 800, both Upper Arlington’s Kyle Hughes and Worthington Kilbourne’s Ryan Foisset dipped under the 2:00 barrier in 1:59.47 and 1:59.84, respectively. In the 3200, Hilliard Darby’s Logan Behm took the title in 9:21, while Dublin Coffman’s Ben Canales, Logan’s Andrew Perry, and Watterson’s Jack Hangen all broke 9:30.

Mason Rod Russell Invitational:

Several area runners competed in the annual Bizzari Mile at the Mason Rod Russell Invitational, known as one of the fastest 1600-meter races of the season. While the field was not as deep as in a typical year, three performances stood out: Westerville North’s Casey Carlos finishing 5th in 4:12, and Dublin Jerome’s Graham Tyler and Ethan Ishida finishing 7th and 15th in 4:14 and 4:19, respectively.
