About the candidates:
Charlie Guerrera – The Dublin Jerome senior delivered a pair of impressive performances at the indoor state meet. First, he anchored Jerome’s state championship 4x800 meter relay, which posted an Ohio #2 all-time mark. He then doubled back to finish second in the 3200 with a time of 9:11, finishing just behind a fresh Eli Ilg.
Matthew Schroff – The biggest distance upset of the day came from Olentangy Orange senior Matthew Schroff, who pulled off a stunning victory in the 1600. Despite St. Ignatius’s Max Friedrich entering with a nationally ranked seed time of 4:08, Schroff outkicked him to claim the state title.
Owen Towler – Gahanna Lincoln senior Owen Towler captured his first state title with a commanding victory in the 800 meter run. Entering the meet as the top seed, Towler quickly established himself as the class of the field. He also contributed to Gahanna’s third-place finish in the 4x400 relay, running a strong second leg.
Dylan Winters – Rounding out our nominees is Reynoldsburg senior and mid-distance specialist Dylan Winters. Seeded seventh with a time of 1:57.16, Winters delivered a massive performance in the 800 meter run, clocking a personal best of 1:55.80 to finish third overall.
