Winner: Lavon Wilborn
School: New Albany
Quote: “I want to continue to make a name for myself and prove I can be a top contender this year”
Highlight:
It was a big day for New Albany sophomore Lavon Wilborn, who captured his first conference title in the 800 meters at the OCC Ohio Division meet. In a standout performance, he upset multi-time conference champion Owen Towler—who was doubling back from the 1600—and ran a significant personal best of 1:55.19.
While his performance may have surprised many, for Lavon, it was all part of the plan. “I felt good all day and had a lot of confidence going into this race,” he explained. “Despite having Owen in it, I had no doubt in myself to be up there at first.” He executed his race well, positioning himself smartly and finishing strong to pull off the upset.
This race should be just the beginning for the rising star. Looking ahead, Wilborn says his goals are to “continue to make a name for myself and prove I can be a top contender this year in the 800.” With an already stacked region in the event, he’ll have his work cut out for him—but if he stays on his current trajectory, he’ll be a serious threat at the state level.
