Winner: Mack Weithman
School: Marysville
Quote: “It felt great to advance to regionals… and break my school record”
Highlight:
Districts seem to be a magical day for Mack Weithman. After bursting onto the scene as a sophomore by running 4:17 in the 1600 at last year’s district meet, Weithman delivered another breakout performance—this time in the 800. He ran 1:54.97 to qualify for regionals, significantly improving his personal best and breaking Marysville’s school record.
The Marysville junior had quite the day. Entered in both the 1600 and 800—each with tough odds to advance—he faced early adversity. In the 1600, it appeared during the final lap that he was experiencing health issues, visibly slowing and finishing in 4:54. But in hindsight, it may have been a strategic decision. Realizing he was out of contention, Weithman conserved energy for the 800—and that decision paid off.
In what may have been the most exciting race of the day across any district, the field went out in 56 seconds, with Weithman sitting in ninth place at the halfway mark. From there, he launched his move, charging down the home stretch and earning a spot at regionals. Reflecting on the moment, he said, “It felt great to advance to regionals in such a fast district and break my school record!” Though his season has now come to a close, Weithman is “excited to drop more time next season.” With an already impressive resume, he’ll be a major contender in the region as a senior.
