Boys Runner of the Week – 2/22

Winner: Ty Munroe

School: Olentangy

Highlight: The Olentangy senior ran a lightning-fast 1:56.69 in the 800m at the Ashland High Performance Meet, a mark good enough to earn your vote for our Boys Runner of the Week and secure a spot in this weekend's fast section of the 800m at the D1 Indoor State Championships.

Munroe has competed seven times this indoor season and has yet to finish worse than fourth place. All seven of his races have been in either the 800m or the 400m, showcasing his strength as a true middle-distance athlete. Entering the state championships, he boasts marks of 52.18 and 1:56.69, ranking him seventh in the 800m for D1.

Although his PR of 1:56.69 resulted in his lowest finish of the indoor season, it came against the toughest field he’s faced. “It was a good race with many of the top 800m runners in the state. It’s always fun to run with a fast field,” said Munroe, acknowledging both the strength of the competition and the value of gaining experience against the state's top contenders. Now, he shifts his attention to another loaded 800m field this weekend.

“I look forward to competing at indoor states and indoor nationals with the goal of dropping time in each event,” said Munroe when asked about his aspirations. Earning a spot in the fast heat at the state championships has not only set him up to improve his time but also positioned him for a podium finish and All-Ohio honors.

As a senior, Munroe is already looking ahead to the outdoor season. “Outdoor season should be very competitive as well, with Olentangy returning some great athletes,” he said. We look forward to watching Munroe compete this weekend, as well as at indoor nationals and outdoors.
