Boys Runner of the Week from Regional Championships

Winner: Gabe Wise

School: Westerville North

Highlight: Gabe Wise delivered his best performance of the year at the biggest moment, dropping a 15-second lifetime best to help Westerville North upset top-ranked Dublin Jerome and secure the Regional title. In doing so, Wise also snagged his first-ever individual state qualification.

Westerville North’s rapid ascent as a state powerhouse has been impressive, but it's runners like Wise who have been instrumental in producing consistent, championship-worthy performances. Although standout athletes like Ben Gabelman, Michael Dellasanta, and Andrew Bracken propelled the Warriors into the state spotlight, Wise has played a vital role in the team’s success across cross-country and track. This past spring, Wise was part of Westerville North’s state title-winning 4x800 relay team. While he acknowledges the impact of having superstars like those before him, Wise understands that this year’s team is also one to be reckoned with.

“With losing both Ben and Michael, a lot of people counted us out for the postseason. But I think we’re a team that can still win the state championship this weekend,” Wise remarked, displaying the kind of confidence you love to hear from a veteran leader. Consistent throughout the season, Wise had his breakout race at Regionals. “I knew if I wanted the team to win the regional title, I would need to step it up compared to the last couple weeks.” He did just that, posting a lifetime best of 15:51 to place 15th individually and contribute to the Warriors’ team Regional Championship.

The Warriors have been on an impressive streak and now look to cap it off with a state title. While they’re certainly contenders, it will take another stellar race from Wise and teammate Charlie Bosler, as well as a return to form for Jordan Mazak. If they can pull this off, and if Casey Carlos and Jeffery Kerns continue their strong seasons, there’s every reason to believe that Westerville North could be standing atop the podium on Saturday afternoon.
