In Ohio’s largest region, there were no surprises in the boys' individual title race. Butler commit Eli Ilg easily captured the regional crown, winning by over 20 seconds and continuing his dominant season. With a PR of 14:45, the senior hasn’t lost since September 7 at the Wooster Invitational. Behind him was junior Maxwell Friedrich, whose breakout season saw him jump from 24th at last year’s regional meet to a runner-up finish this year.
Region 1 advances 8 teams and 32 individuals—the most in the state. The front of the race was notably spread out, with the first 16 qualifiers ranging from 15:16 to 16:14, marking a nearly one-minute gap from 1st to 16th. However, the back half of the qualifying field was much tighter, with all 16 runners finishing within a mere seven seconds of one another, making for a thrilling spectacle as competitors stayed packed together through much of the race.
On the team side, the competition wasn’t as close as the individual race. Hudson secured a strong win over Massillon Jackson, bolstered by solid runs from their 3rd, 4th, and 5th runners. Jackson had a solid lineup, but 69 points from their fifth runner kept them from claiming the title. Mentor faced a similar issue, with their fifth runner scoring 81 points, relegating them to third. Medina, finishing 9th, struggled without a clear number-one runner, while New Philadelphia had standout performances from their top two, who placed 4th and 8th, but still missed qualifying for state by 21 points.

The girls' race wasn’t close, with Union Lake’s Daniela Scheffler dominating the field and winning by nearly a full minute in 17:20. Scheffler has run even faster this season, clocking an Ohio #1 time of 16:41 earlier in the year. Junior Kaitlyn Reece from Avon finished second in 18:24, leading her team to a third-place regional finish. Only two other runners—Hannah Jicha from Strongsville and Danzi Jones from Stow Munroe Falls—broke 19 minutes, placing 3rd and 4th, respectively.
Like the boys’ Region 1, eight girls' teams qualified for states. Wadsworth claimed the win with 128 points, thanks to the lowest-scoring #4 runner in the race, allowing them to qualify four runners individually. They’re now Region 1’s top state meet contender, though their full potential remains hard to predict. Glenoak followed closely, just 9 points behind, despite lacking a true front-runner in the top 10. Their impressive pack, with a spread of only 45 seconds—the best in the race—was key to their performance.
As with the boys' race, the competition intensified near the final qualifying spots. The last six qualifiers and the runner who missed out were separated by less than 10 seconds, creating a tense finish for spectators.
Region 1 delivered thrilling performances and tight competition, setting up an exciting state meet. With standout individual wins and hard-fought team battles, Ohio’s best are primed to take on the season’s final challenge. This season has been unforgettable, and the best is yet to come.
