About the candidates:
Laken Wenclewicz (Hilliard Davidson)
It looks like Hilliard Davidson has another star in the making. Freshman Laken Wenclewicz clocked a 2:18.55 in the 800 and has already shown the potential to follow in the footsteps of the Wildcats’ long tradition of success. Expect her to be a key contributor for years to come.
Bella Conforti (Olentangy Orange)
Olentangy Orange is set to have a formidable distance duo next year, with sophomore Bella Conforti joining forces with two-time 1600m state champion Brooke Chapman. Conforti ended the season as the fastest sophomore in the region in both the 1600 and 3200 — by a significant margin — and is quickly emerging as a force in her own right.
Elsa Tonnesson (Granville)
Granville freshman Elsa Tonnesson made an immediate impact this year, establishing herself as one of the region’s top 1600m runners. She ran an impressive 5:05 at the district meet and has plenty of upside as she continues to develop in the coming seasons.
Maya Speed (New Albany)
New Albany sophomore Maya Speed, like her teammate Lavon Wilborn, delivered a breakout postseason. She dropped her 800m personal best from 2:28 to 2:19 and contributed strong legs on the Eagles’ 4x800 relay. With that kind of progress, she’ll be a key name to watch next spring
