Boys 1600m Regional Rankings

Note: These rankings are based on how we believe the event will play out at the regional meet, not on current times alone. We’ve also ranked athletes in the event(s) we believe they will actually contest. For example, some athletes may double or triple, which could affect their freshness for certain events.

1. Matthew Schroff: Although he doesn’t hold the fastest time in the region, it’s hard to bet against the indoor 1600m state champion. Schroff is a postseason staple and placed third at outdoor state last year. He also holds the region's fastest 800m time, highlighting his lethal footspeed. We expect him to use his kick to narrowly win the 1600m regional title and likely double back in the 3200m.

2. Charlie Guerrera: More of a 1B than a No. 2, Guerrera holds the fastest time in the region this year with a 4:09. While he might focus solely on the 3200m, we expect him to double and line up in the 1600m as well. We give Schroff a slight edge due to his kick, but we wouldn’t be surprised at all if Guerrera comes away with the win.

3. Brock Jarrett: Riding an incredible wave of momentum, Jarrett recently won the 1600m at the highly competitive Wayne Invite. He’s also clocked 1:55 in the 800m, showing strong closing speed. Notably, Jarrett has raced sparingly this season, meaning he’ll be especially fresh for the postseason — a possible advantage in a tightly contested race.

4. Ethan Ishida: The second Celtic on the list, Ishida owns the region's second-fastest 1600m time at 4:14. Dublin Jerome’s deep roster makes it hard to predict who will run what, but after his brilliant performance in the Bizzarri Mile, it would be a shock to see him in anything other than the 1600m. Though ranked fourth, Ishida is a legitimate top-three threat.

5. Casey Carlos: Perhaps the most consistent performer of Westerville North’s “Big 3” this season, Carlos has recently PR’d in both the 1600m and 3200m. His 4:17 sixth-place finish at Wayne shows he can hang with the region’s best. If he’s on his game at Pick North, a top-four finish is well within reach.

6. Zee Rabi: The senior from Liberty has run 4:21 this season but boasts a 4:18 PR from last year’s regional meet, where he placed eighth. He recently clocked a 51.2 in the open 400m just a day before his 4:21, demonstrating his speed. A fully rested Rabi could be a serious threat, especially if the race goes out slow.

7. Mack Weithman: Though he hasn’t PR’d in the 1600m yet this year, Weithman rose to the occasion at districts last season, running 4:17 to nab the final regional spot. This spring, he’s already posted times of 1:58 in the 800m and 52.9 in the 400m. If he peaks again in the postseason, he’ll be in the mix for a podium finish.

8. Braydon Nix: One of the region’s biggest breakout stars, Nix entered the season with a 4:33 PR, then dropped to 4:29 before cutting another five seconds to reach 4:24. He’s also run 51.9 in the 400m, showing he has the wheels to hang with the best.
