Boys District 3 Preview

The talent in this district runs deep, especially in the distance events where state-caliber athletes are set to battle for just four qualifying spots. From established names like Charlie Guerrera and Owen Towler to breakout underclassmen and experienced contenders returning to form, these races promise tight finishes and plenty of drama. Here's who we see advancing to the regional meet in the 1600, 800, and 3200.

1600 Predicted Qualifiers: Charlie Guerrera, Ethan Ishida, Gavin Swain, Andrew Gould

This race features two clear qualifiers followed by four athletes fighting for the final two spots. Charlie Guerrera and Ethan Ishida, both with sub-4:15 personal bests and strong chances to make it to the state meet, should advance without issue. After them, the remaining spots will likely come down to Gavin Swain, Ethan LaCross, Andrew Gould, and Mack Weithman. While Weithman has the fastest personal best in the group at 4:17, it came last year—his season best sits at 4:28. Meanwhile, Swain, LaCross, and Gould all ran faster than that at conferences, finishing within seconds of each other. I’ll take the underclassman duo of Swain and Gould to grab the final two qualifying spots based on how they raced last week.

800 Predicted Qualifiers: Owen Towler, Lavon Wilborn, Graham Tyler, Andrew Dietrich

This one should be another close race. Owen Towler is a clear lock—he’ll be fresh for this race and is the reigning indoor state champion. Lavon Wilborn also looks like a strong qualifier after his low-1:55 performance last week. Graham Tyler, with a personal best of 1:56, is another strong bet to advance. That leaves one spot up for grabs among Austyn Fox, Marcus Speed, Andrew Dietrich, and Alex Hohman. While all four are legitimate contenders, I’m giving the slight edge to Fox. His 800 seed time isn’t the fastest, but he’s run 51.09 in the open 400 and 4:23 in the 1600—those performances suggest he has the range to put together a 1:56 and snag fourth place.

3200 Predicted Qualifiers: Charlie Guerrera, Austin Benedict, Max Harder, Cayden McClure

Outside of Guerrera, who is a clear favorite, this race is wide open. Austin Benedict, Max Harder, Cayden McClure, Vansh Sethi, Liam Irvin, and Cohen Stump all appear to be in contention for the final three spots. Harder stands out as the only athlete in the group with a sub-9:30 personal best, giving him a strong chance to advance. Although this hasn’t been Benedict’s best season, I still expect him to qualify. For the final spot, I’m picking McClure—he benefits from elite training at Dublin Jerome and has the most upside in this field. That said, this is easily the most unpredictable race in my district predictions.

With so many competitive fields and little separating the top contenders, it’s clear that every move, split, and surge will count. Whether it’s postseason momentum or untapped potential, the difference-makers will rise to the occasion. Expect a few surprises—and some unforgettable finishes—as these athletes fight to keep their seasons alive.
